UAlg awarded Good Practices Award and Teaching Learning Award

The valorization and recognition of merit are very important aspects in the harmonious development of any institution. Taking into account this assumption, UAlg instituted the "Good Practices Award" and the "Teaching Learning Award", which were delivered, for the first time, in a ceremony that took place on May 18, at 17h30, at the Amphitheater Teresa Gamito, Gambelas Campus.

"Good Practices Award"

Regarding the 2019/20 school year, two "Good Practices" were distinguished: the "Formulation and Production of Alcohol-Based Antiseptic Solution with Aloe Extract" and the "Milage Learn +" platform.

"Formulation and Production of Alcohol-Based Antiseptic Solution with Aloe Extract" was developed by João Manuel Marreiros Duarte, technical assistant of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT). This alcohol-based antiseptic solution was produced at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, in a situation of lack of a hand sanitizing product, and allowed to face the scarcity of this solution, through the use of available and even underused resources (Aloe arborescens), creating a product with value for the institution. The initial goal of this practice was to make available a disinfectant for use in the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the FCT, which, besides its antiseptic properties (Ethanol 70%, with 0.014% of H2O2), would help prevent dehydration of hands due to frequent use. This practice met the needs of UAlg, and its use has been extended to all Campi to date.

The "Milage Learn +" platform was developed by six teachers: Mauro Jorge Guerreiro Figueiredo, Custódia do Sacramento Cruz Fonseca, José Inácio de Jesus Rodrigues, Juan Carlos Sanchez Rodriguez, Marielba Silva de Zacarias and Paula Cristina Negrão Ventura Martins. MILAGE APRENDER+ is a Blended-Learning teaching platform, developed under the scope of the MILAGE (MathematIcs bLended Augmented GamE), LEARN+ and INCOLLAB projects, of the ERASMUS+ programme funded by the European Union, and is available for free for mobile devices (Android and iOS) and Windows and Mac computers. Its main objective is to promote the creation of digital resources and the use of information and communication technologies (smartphones, tablets or computers) for learning anywhere at any time, aiming to improve the performance of all students. The platform was designed by implementing a pedagogical model that enhances learning in any subject in primary, secondary and university education. With more than 50,000 students, it is used at the University of the Algarve and also at the University of Cádiz.

The "University of Algarve Good Practices Award" was established with the aim of identifying and disseminating the best practices implemented at UAlg in the areas of teaching and learning; research and development; community and governance, recognising the merit of those responsible and the structures involved.

"Teaching Learning Award"

This year, also for the first time, the "UAlg Teaching Learning Award - Teacher of the Year distinguished by Students" was delivered. This award is given to the teachers who stand out in the assessment made by the students, who globally evaluate their performance, within the scope of the surveys on the perception of teaching and learning.

For the academic year 2019/2020, 16 lecturers were awarded the "UAlg Teaching Learning Award - Students' Teacher of the Year", two from each Organic Unit, one career lecturer and one guest lecturer.
