Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects
The Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is a ranking of higher education institutions, conducted by Shanghai's Jiao Tong University and ever since by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. The ranking compares over 1800 higher education institutions, using a formula that considers:
- the number of alumni that won the Nobel Prize and the Fields Medal (10%)
- faculty members who have won such awards (20%)
- highly cited researchers in 21 general categories (20%)
- the articles produced in the scientific Journal of Nature and Science (20%)
- the Science Citation Index and the Social Sciences Citation Index (20%)
- academic performance per capita in the previously mentioned indicators (10%)
It is one of the three most influential and widely observed international university rankings, along with the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is the oldest and one of the most prestigious rankings in the world and is based on indicators of scientific productivity and research quality, using different indicators collected from internationally recognized databases, mainly by Clarivate™, such as the number of scientific articles published, the quality of scientific publications measured by the number of articles in the most cited category in the area under evaluation, the number of citations, articles published with international collaboration (internationalization index) and awards received.
The University of Algarve (UAlg) integrates once again the list of the best in the world in Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2022, highlighting again in the area of Hospitality & Tourism Management, ranking 76-100, followed by Oceanography, ranking 151-200. In this recently published edition, UAlg remained in the Top 100 of the Shanghai Ranking in the area of Hospitality & Tourism Management, which selected the 300 best institutions worldwide.
In the latest edition of this ranking 54 scientific areas are evaluated, in which up to 500 higher education institutions are listed, from more than 1,800 out of 5,000 universities across 96 countries and regions that are finally listed in the rankings. You can access the global results here.
