The Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is a ranking of higher education institutions, conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and since by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.

The ranking compares more than 1 200 higher education institutions, using a formula that takes into account:

  • the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal-winning alumni (10%)
  • faculty members who have won such awards (20%)
  • the highly cited researchers in 21 general categories (20%)
  • the articles produced in the scientific journals Nature and Science (20%)
  • the Science Citation Index and the Social Sciences Citation Index (20%)
  • and academic performance per capita in the aforementioned indicators (10%)

It is one of the three most influential and widely observed international university rankings, along with the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
