Welcome to FMCB!
The new Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (FMCB) created in 2020, previously Department of Biomedical Sciences and Medicine (DCBM) was created as a special unit in 2008, temporarily under the Office of the Rector in order to provide the conditions necessary for the new course in Medicine to be set up.
The faculty provides courses in Biomedical Sciences at undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels, as well as an Integrated Master's in Medicine. Laboratories were created where cutting-edge research in the field of regenerative medicine is carried out, focusing on stem cell biology and organogenesis, cancer cell biology and cell therapies. This line of research is led by a team of 11 senior scientists, which is expected to increase to 18 in the short term.
The new medical course offered by FMCB has unique and innovative features, as it is the first 4-year course for postgraduates in Europe outside the United Kingdom and Ireland. The curriculum is based on problem-based learning and is the first programme in Europe to offer clinical training clearly focused on General and Family Medicine. The course represents a significant leap into the 21st century for medical education in Portugal. The first batch of doctors was trained in July 2013.
The Integrated Master’s in Medicine is part of one of the new anchor areas within the University of Algarve, which, if properly developed and promoted, will firmly place the University on the world map of Medical Education.
