Overview
Being able to identify and manage unstable patients is essential for junior doctors. Immediate recognition and early intervention to reverse the underlying pathological process can significantly improve patient outcomes. However, the skills needed to deal with these patients are rarely taught in undergraduate or postgraduate medical training, and interns are often called upon to perform these tasks with little preparation. In the HANDS-ON ABCDE course, we introduce the basic skills needed for the recognition, assessment, and treatment of unstable patients. These include taking a quick and focused history, performing the ABCDE physical assessment, knowing how and when to call for help, using complementary diagnostic tools, and applying clinical reasoning to arrive at the correct diagnosis. We also teach essential non-technical skills, including situational leadership and team communication, which are fundamental to the effective functioning of interprofessional teams and to ensuring patient safety.

Objectives

  • Identify unstable patients
  • Assess patients using the CHAMU and ABCDE approaches
  • Request assistance using the ISBAR method
  • Initiate stabilisation measures in unstable patients
  • Request and interpret complementary diagnostic and treatment methods
  • Develop a treatment plan
