Overview
Ultrasound is a tool used across all specialities and widely used as a first-line examination in the initial assessment of thyroid disease, from paediatric age to pregnancy, in the context ofautoimmune and tumour diseases. Ultrasound serves as a decision-making aid for therapy and cytological diagnosis with fine needle aspiration (FNA), but also as a support for endocrinologyconsultations for follow-up of known lesions, before and after FNA.Thyroid and neck ultrasound is the first-line method for the assessment of paediatric pathology, from congenital malformations to inflammatory-infectious involvement.It is a non-invasive, radiation-free, low-cost and accessible method in consultation, with high sensitivity and specificity in the most common pathologies, in the assessment of multinodular goitre,and a guide to stability or the need to escalate to other MCDTs. It is also the initial method of choice for assessing suspicious tumour lesions and, through the TI RADS Classification, deciding onthe diagnostic protocol.Neck ultrasound allows for the non-invasive evaluation of the anterolateral cervical lymph node chains. The course is based on this ultrasound evaluation and also on the salivary glands, includingthe parotid and submaxillary glands, addressing ultrasound anatomy and the application of ultrasound in the main pathologies: inflammatory, lithiasic, autoimmune, and tumour.

Objectives

  • Correctly preparing and adjusting the ultrasound machine for examining soft tissues in the neck;
  • Selecting and positioning the appropriate probe according to the area to be studied - Thyroid or Salivary Glands;• Identifying the main anatomical structures: thyroid, salivary glands, Stenon and Warton ducts, ganglion chains, neck vessels;
  • Performing a systematic examination of the neck, covering the aforementioned structures;
  • Recognise normal thyroid ultrasound patterns, thyroiditis patterns and anatomical variants;
  • Detect and describe ultrasound signs of common pathologies: solid, cystic and mixed thyroid nodules, microcalcifications, vascularisation and TI RADS classification;
  • With the knowledge acquired, address thyroid and neck ultrasound in each of the main areas of its use, pathologies and age groups, with the aim of enabling healthcare professionals to useultrasound safely in the clinical environment.

Operating Mode

The course includes a virtual class and 14 hours of in-person training, covering theoretical review content and the practical component, on 22 and 23 May, from 09:00 to 17:00.
