Conditions of access
The following students may apply for the course leading to a doctorate degree:
a) Holders of a master's degree or equivalent in the areas of natural sciences (e.g. Biology, Geology, Chemistry, etc.), health and related sciences (e.g. Medicine, Dental Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences, etc.) or exact sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, etc.).
b) Exceptions to this rule, such as graduates holders with a significant academic, scientific or professional curriculum, will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Course Committee, always taking into account eligibility for funding. Research experience will be valued but is not mandatory.
Criteria for selection of the candidates
1. Academic curriculum (degrees obtained) – curriculum assessment-
Degree, degree and master's degree (joint average between degree grade and master's grade) or integrated master's degree in natural and exact sciences and health with:
- average equal to or greater than 16 points – 4,00 points
- average between 14 and 15 values – 3,00 points
- average less than 14 values – 1,00 points
(Maximum of 4,00 points)
2. Professional activity and other relevant activities in the field of health, life sciences and medicine – curriculum assessment.
Duration of professional activity (in your area of training)
- 4 or more years – 3,00 points
- Between 1 e 3 years – 1,00 points
Other relevant activities – 2,00 points
(Maximum of 5,00 points)
3. Scientific work: scientific articles published in indexed journals and scientific articles published in other journals (distinguishing the works in which he is the first, second or last author from the rest); research projects in which you participated as a researcher; oral presentations and posters presented at national or international scientific conferences – curriculum evaluation.
Scientific work:
- scientific articles published (in the last 5 years) in journals indexed as first, second or last author – 1 point per article;
- scientific articles published (in the last 5 years) in indexed journals not being the first, second or last author – 0,50 points per article;
- scientific articles published in non-indexed journals as first, second or last author – 0.25 points per article;
- research projects in which you participated as a researcher – 2,00 points per project (if you were project coordinator, 1,00 more point is added);
- Oral presentations and posters presented at international scientific conferences – 1,00 point for oral communication; 0,50 points per poster;
- Oral presentations and posters presented at national scientific congresses – 0,50 points per oral communication; 0,25 points per poster.

4. Document with description of motivation (Maximum 6,000 characters including spaces). Letters of recommendation (maximum three).

Candidate ranking procedure: The Final Classification of candidates will be presented to two decimal places, on a scale of 0 to 20 points, resulting from the sum of the classifications obtained in the criteria indicated above.
In accordance with the criteria identified above and the limit on the number of places available, candidates with the highest Final Classification, provided it is equal to or greater than 12.00 (twelve) points, will be placed - ‘Admitted - Placed’.
The remaining candidates with a Final Classification equal to or greater than 12.00 (twelve) points (candidates ranked after the 12th position) will be considered alternates - ‘Admitted - Not Placed’. Candidates who are “Admitted – Not placed” (alternates) will be automatically placed in descending order of their Final Classification score, in the event of withdrawals by candidates who are “Admitted – Placed” before the start of the Doctoral Programme.
Candidates with a Final Classification of less than 12.00 (twelve) points will be automatically excluded – ‘Not admitted’.
Necessary documentation
National Candidates:
a) Certificate(s) of qualifications for the academic degree(s) obtained, indicating the respective final classification and ECTS; All academic degrees indicated in the curriculum vitae must be proven with the respective qualification certificates, which must include the respective final classification and ECTS. If the academic degree(s) were obtained abroad, the documents mentioned in paragraphs a) and b) of "International Students" below must be submitted.
b) Curriculum Vitae;
c) Document describing the motivation and Letter(s) of recommendation; Maximum 6,000 characters including spaces;
d) Proof of payment of the application fee.
International Candidates:
a) Documents proving access qualifications, indicating the academic degree(s) obtained and respective classification, duly validated by the competent entity of the issuing country (recognized by a Portuguese diplomatic or consular authority or presented with the affixing of the Hague Apostille by the competent authority of the State where the document originates). Under Article 30, paragraph c), of the Regulation of study cycles leading to master's and doctor's degrees at the University of Algarve, the Scientific Council may decide on the academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognizing the ability to carry out a doctorate (not confers on its holder the equivalence of a bachelor's or master's degree, or its recognition);
b) Curriculum Vitae;
c) Document with a description of the motivation and Letter(s) of recommendation;
d) Proof of payment of the application fee;
All documents in the previous paragraphs that are not issued in Portuguese or English must be translated into one of these languages (recognized/validated translation).
The documents mentioned must be submitted online via the University of Algarve Academic Portal.
